The LambdaGain IPoDWDM Playbook: Right-Sizing Optical Networks
IPoDWDM is simplifying optical transport by bringing coherent DWDM directly into routers and switches. But not every network needs the same optical architecture.
A 40 km metro connection has very different requirements from a 200 km regional link. The key is to deploy only the optical functionality the network actually needs.
That is the idea behind the LambdaGain IPoDWDM Playbook: a modular portfolio of coherent optics, pluggable amplification, and passive DWDM that can be combined to right-size each deployment.
1. Coherent Pluggable Optics
LambdaGain coherent pluggables bring DWDM transport directly into compatible router and switch ports, eliminating dedicated transponders where they aren’t required.
Portfolio highlights:
- 100G: ZR, ZR High Power, Dual Laser
- 400G: ZR, ZR+, ZR+ High Power
- 800G: ZR, ZR+
Product Spotlight — LambdaGain Coherent Optics
Open, multi-vendor coherent solutions provide the foundation for metro, DCI, and regional IPoDWDM deployments.
Right-sizing principle: Start with the coherent optic that provides the capacity and reach required by the application—without overbuilding the transport layer.
2. Pluggable Line System
When additional optical reach is required, a traditional line-system shelf isn’t always necessary.
The LambdaGain Pluggable Line System (PLS) adds amplification in a compact pluggable form factor, allowing operators to extend IPoDWDM links without introducing a large optical platform.
Product Spotlight — LambdaGain Pluggable EDFA
- Compact SFP form factor
- Plug-and-play deployment
- Minimal rack space and power
- Flexible booster and pre-amplification options
- Simplified sparing and maintenance
Right-sizing principle: Add amplification where the optical budget requires it—not everywhere by default.
3. Flexible Passive DWDM
The third building block is a passive optical layer tailored to the capacity and topology of the network.
LambdaGain Passive DWDM options include:
- 4-, 8-, 16+ channel Mux/Demux
- High-density LGX platforms
- Custom channel plans
- Flexible connector and packaging options
With no power requirement and minimal operational overhead, passive DWDM provides a simple foundation for many routed optical networks.
Right-sizing principle: Select the channel count, form factor, and configuration that fit today’s requirements while allowing room for growth.
Putting the Playbook to Work
The strength of the LambdaGain approach comes from combining these building blocks based on the application.
Application | Right-Sized LambdaGain Solution |
Metro DCI | 400G ZR/ZR+ + Passive DWDM |
Extended Metro & Regional Transport | 400G ZR+ + Passive DWDM + Pluggable EDFA |
AI / Data Center Interconnect | 400G/800G Coherent Optics + High-Density DWDM + Amplification as Required |
Instead of starting with a large optical system and scaling it down, LambdaGain starts with the application and builds up only what is required.
Why the LambdaGain IPoDWDM Playbook?
The value isn’t simply having coherent optics, amplifiers, or passive DWDM products. It is having the flexibility to combine them into a solution optimized for the actual network.
The LambdaGain approach provides:
- Open, multi-vendor interoperability
- Flexible optical building blocks
- Lower space and power requirements
- Reduced deployment complexity
- Scalability from metro to regional networks
- A practical path from 100G and 400G to 800G
The result is a network designed around the customer’s requirements—not around the limitations of a fixed optical platform.
Right-sized. Open. Scalable. Cost-effective.
