Rethinking Rural FTTH Economics with Pluggable Line Systems

DWDM pluggable line systems extend remote OLT reach beyond 100 km while reducing the cost and infrastructure required for rural FTTH backhaul.

Extending FTTH into low-density communities can become uneconomic when remote OLTs are far from the nearest major point of presence (POP) and spare fiber is limited. In a recent series of deployments, FONEX helped a major service provider extend FTTH services to rural communities where OLTs were located more than 100 km from the nearest major POP. The solution used LambdaGain ™ DWDM Pluggable Line Systems (PLS) to combine long reach, multi-wavelength capacity, and a much smaller infrastructure footprint than a traditional transport platform.

Deployment at a glance

REACH
More than 100 km to remote OLT locations
CAPACITY
Up to 40 DWDM wavelengths
TOPOLOGY
Amplified cascade serving 4–6 remote OLT sites
BUSINESS TARGET
3–5 year operator payback period

The challenge: long reach, limited fiber, difficult economics

The service area had very limited fiber resources, yet the remote OLTs needed reliable backhaul over long distances. DWDM was therefore the practical way to carry multiple services over the available fiber. The issue was cost: traditional OTN/ROADM transport platforms were difficult to justify for the relatively small subscriber base in each rural community. Dedicated transport hardware, rack space, power, cooling, and site improvements pushed the project economics outside the operator’s target range.

The LambdaGain ™ approach: move the line system into pluggable and passive components

Rather than deploy a conventional transport platform at each location, LambdaGain ™ proposed a Pluggable Line System designed to carry up to 40 DWDM wavelengths from the local POP and reach well beyond 100 km. The architecture uses pluggable EDFA amplifiers hosted in available ports on existing network equipment such as routers and OLTs. The remaining line-system elements are passive, eliminating the need for new powered network elements, and minimizing additional rack space and site upgrade requirements at the terminal locations.

Using an amplified cascade architecture, the system can serve 4 to 6 remote OLT locations over a single working fiber, with a second fiber used for standby protection when required. This allowed the operator to extend capacity dramatically while keeping the access architecture simple and cost-efficient.

Engineering considerations

Achieving the required reach depended on several elements working together:

  • High-power 10 Gb/s DWDM optics to maximize the optical link budget.
  • Pluggable EDFA amplification to extend reach without introducing a dedicated line-system shelf.
  • Optical circulators to adapt the bidirectional single-fiber outside-plant link so that transmit and receive paths can be amplified independently.
  • Dispersion Compensation Modules (DCMs) to mitigate chromatic-dispersion penalties over long fiber spans.

For the longest routes, amplification is introduced at an intermediate terminal where suitable host equipment is available. Protection can be implemented at the service layer using the link-protection mechanisms already available in the IP routers, such as LAG, allowing the architecture to protect the active path — including the pluggable amplifiers — without adding a separate protection platform.

Business impact: a transport architecture that fit the rural FTTH business case

For these deployments, the operator found the LambdaGain ™ PLS solution to be an order of magnitude lower in cost than a traditional OTN deployment. By reusing existing router and OLT ports for amplification and relying on passive line components, the solution reduced equipment CAPEX, minimized rack-space requirements, and avoided significant power and air-conditioning upgrades.

Just as importantly, the solution remained closely aligned with the access network rather than introducing a separate, operationally heavier transport platform. The lower capital requirement brought the project into the operator’s target 3 to 5-year payback period, allowing the deployments to proceed.

Community impact: extending FTTH to areas that were otherwise difficult to serve

With the economics brought into range, the operator was able to extend next-generation FTTH services to dozens of rural communities. The case demonstrates where a pluggable line system can be especially effective: low-density deployments that require long reach and DWDM capacity, but where the cost and footprint of a conventional transport system are difficult to justify.

What the operator gained

LONG REACH
Remote OLT backhaul beyond 100 km
LOWER INFRASTRUCTURE
Less dedicated transport hardware, rack space, power, and cooling
ECONOMIC VIABILITY
Project brought into the operator’s 3–5 year payback target
SERVICE EXPANSION
FTTH extended to dozens of rural communities

Where a Pluggable Line System is a strong fit

  • Remote OLTs require long-reach backhaul from a central POP.
  • Fiber is limited, making DWDM the practical way to scale capacity.
  • Subscriber density makes a full OTN/ROADM transport platform difficult to justify.
  • Existing router or OLT host ports can be used for pluggable amplification.
